This iconic original black leather 'Egg' chair by Arne Jacobsen is a very early, circa 1958 production by Fritz Hansen and signed underneath on the leather with the FH stamp and partial Danish Control label (see last photo). Examples with this style of signature are indicative of the first few years of production since the original design in 1958.

This early collectors example has also been serviced by an upholstery restoration expert who often restores priceless antiques such as Carlo Bugatti designs which values can exceed $200,000. This expert unstitched some of the seams around where the interior foam was hardened and needed to be replaced. Then the interior foam in those areas was replaced and the leather hand-stitched back. The chair is now fully usable for many more years to come while retaining the original leather and gorgeous patina.

In addition, the seat appears to be an integrated seat cushion model from prior to the addition of a separate seat cushion which started in the following years. We created a new seat cushion using aged black leather so that you have the option of using with or without the cushion.

The original black leather has gorgeous patina and light attractive distressing as can be seen in the photos. The foam was replaced in the areas that needed it so most of the foam is soft and pliable. There are a couple small areas where the original foam is slightly hard but to an acceptable amount for regular use so we left those areas alone. The leather is also very much usable for regular use, we had our leather restoration expert service the leather as well in areas that needed it so that you can enjoy this chair without worry of future issues. For those who love and enjoy aged leather - this is a prime example to possess and adore. And for collectors - this is on a much higher level of desirability from reupholstered examples and newer examples. Finding an early Egg chair in original leather that is still usable is like finding a needle in a haystack, so collectors and interior designers shopping for an important client - get this before it's gone.

The biomorphic Egg chair by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen cradles and supports the human body while allowing for conversation or privacy. This swivel chair stands on a cast aluminum four-star base, offering 360° of movement. The Fritz Hansen Egg chair was originally conceptualized for the SAS Royal Copenhagen Hotel, Denmark, which Jacobsen designed in its entirety from the building itself to the flatware.

This quintessentially iconic Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen Egg lounge chair would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern or Danish modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a contemporary or Postmodern room. Also consider mixing it up in a traditional, transitional, classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an Apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office.
