This incredible 3-piece 'Marsala' living room set (2 lounge armchairs and 1 three-seat sofa with arms) by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset, c 1971, features thick smoked acrylic frames and beautifully aged leather cushions.

The smoked acrylic frames are made from 'Altuglas' which is similar to Perspex. It's a transparent plastic-like material with a smoked color, that's formed to shape. Thick and hefty - it is very hard and stronger than plastics that you see today.

The leather is also thick and quality, with a glossy hand-feel and sporty stitching throughout. In a light cognac brown color, the leather cushions are long body forming that curve along the acrylic frames. Leather arm cushions bend to wrap the inside and topside of the smoked acrylic arms for supreme comfort and style.

Ideal for collectors, connoisseurs, interior designers and art/ design investors, these early production examples are all-original, each piece is signed and in beautifully aged condition. Also quite rare - and made with such quality materials and craftsmanship that you don't find in todays manufacturing.

One of the things I like best about this design, as a collector, is that it is not easy to copy and that is why you don't see any fakes of these like you do with the 'Togo' design - which is very easy to copy and requires great discipline to avoid buying fakes of. Any fakes of the 'Kafi / Marsala' line would be very easy to identify as a fake, as the Altuglas frames would be near-impossible to accurately mimic. In addition, Ligne Roset no longer produces this line making it much more rare than Togo and other collections that have been in constant production.

Designer Michel Ducaroy, also known for his 'Togo' and 'Kashima' designs, designed the 'Safi / Marsala' line in 1971, two years before designing 'Togo' in 1973. Ligne Roset describes Safi / Marsala as a large eiderdown cushion within a smoked Altuglas frame which was born from the quest for new seating concepts, encouraged by swift changes in social attitudes and the advent of new materials (foams, quilting, thermoformed plastics) which drove Jean Roset and Michel Ducaroy to develop new production techniques.

This 'Marsala' 3-piece living room set by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset would work great in a Post-Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Zen / Minimalism room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office.
