This incredible fully restored 'Africa' dining table by Tobia Scarpa is part of the 'Artona' collection from Maxalto debuted in 1975. This round dining table, which also works great as a game table or center table, features the signature Artona solid striped walnut edge detail, burled wood top, and a concrete block used to weight down the table which fits inside of the base, the concrete block as a handle to make it easy to remove from the base when transporting and signed with an embossed Maxalto logo and shipping label showing a March 4th 1980 order date. The table was made for Jonathan Silver who was friends with David Hockney and owned 'Art and Furniture', a Manchester art and design showroom.

The Artona series was the first line produced by Maxalto, who was the specialist division of B&B Italia. Maxalto was originally set up in 1975 as a high-end group of B&B Italia to focus exclusively on the production of artisanal, mostly wood furniture. Artona was their first project and served as an early Post-Modern counter-message against the common prevailing use of plastics in furniture design during the postwar period.

Completely restored with a French Lacquer finish which is a very expensive and labor intensive process which results in the smoothest, hardest and deepest top coat which is ideal for high-use locations. And it makes the wood look incredibly more expensive - simply touching it you can feel has soft and smooth the finish is. And the depth makes the burled wood grain pop in a magical way. Much better in person than the photos permit. The reflection off of the glossy finish can be seen in many of the photos due to our photography studio lights.

Fits up to 6 chairs comfortable. You can squeeze in 8 narrow chairs if you need.

This would work great in a Post-Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Space Age Mod, Scandinavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Zen / Minimalism room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office.
