1950s Early Production 'DCM' Chairs by Charles Eames for Herman Miller, Signed
This set of four (4) early production DCM (Dining Chair Metal) chairs by Ray and Charles Eames is for Herman Millers earlier years (1956 to 1959) and therefore are collectors items and much more valuable than new production examples. Signed under each chair with Herman Miller patent labels and two chairs with original Herman Miller silver medallion stickers which date the years of production to 1956 to 1959.
These extremely sought after chairs are fabricated from molded walnut plywood seats, not to be confused with bentwood chairs, and backs attached to a metal base, creating a minimal silhouette. The grain of the walnut veneer varies from chair to chair, exhibiting a range of movement and uniqueness within the set. The original Herman Miller silver medallion stickers and labels can be found underneath one of the chairs. Two chairs have both the medallion and patent label and two chairs have the patent label and you can see the outline of where the medallion sticker was (see last photo). The silver Herman Miller medallion dates the chairs to 1956 - 1964 and the patent label dates the chairs to 1956 - 1959 based on the particular set of patent numbers listed. Therefore this set would have been produced somewhere from 1956 to 1959 based on these details.
Originally introduced to the world in 1946 at an exclusive MoMa exhibit, the "Eames Molded Plywood Chair" collection which included the LCW (Low or Lounge Chair Wood), LCM (Low Chair Metal), DCW (Dining Chair Wood) and DCM (Dining Chair Metal) chairs have captured the attention of designers and collectors for decades.
These coveted dining side chairs by Charles Eames for Herman Miller would be a great addition used together or individually around the home as part of a classic or contemporary dining room, living room, den, family room, office or bedroom. They would also be an apt choice in a corporate, retail or hospitality location such as a boutique hotel lobby, cocktail bar, members club, workspace studio, executive office or in a luxe clothing emporium.
