Evans Production Walnut DCM Chairs by Charles Eames, Set of Five, circa 1947
This set of five (5) very rare Evans Production DCM chairs by Ray and Charles Eames predates Herman Miller produced versions. Being considered the "1st Generation" of DCMs this set is already extremely rare - but then add the fact that these are in the rare walnut option - this set is an excellent choice for the collector who wants only the best of the best.
These original DCM Chairs (which stands for Dining Chair Metal) were produced by Evans Products Company at a time when Herman Miller owned the distribution rights but prior to when they also took over manufacturing. Evans Products Company was a renown wood products company that employed over 1,000 skilled laborers at their peak.
These extremely sought after chairs are fabricated from molded plywood seats, not to be confused with bentwood chairs, and backs attached to a metal base, creating a minimal silhouette. The grain of the walnut veneer varies from chair to chair, exhibiting a range of movement and uniqueness within the set. The original Evans Products label can be found underneath one of the chairs. Note that Herman Miller is also listed on the label as this was during the transition period while Herman Miller owned distribution rights but Evans still handled production.
Originally introduced to the world in 1946 at an exclusive MoMa exhibit, the "Eames Molded Plywood Chair" collection which included the LCW (Low or Lounge Chair Wood), LCM (Low Chair Metal), DCW (Dining Chair Wood) and DCM (Dining Chair Metal) chairs have captured the attention of designers and collectors for decades.
These coveted dining side chairs would be a great addition used together or individually around the home as part of a classic or contemporary dining room, living room, den, family room, office or bedroom. They would also be an apt choice in a corporate, retail or hospitality location such as a boutique hotel lobby, cocktail bar, members club, workspace studio, executive office or in a luxe clothing emporium.
