Poul Kjærholm 'PK-65' Steel and Honed Granite Coffee Table, Signed
This very large sized 'PK-65' steel and honed granite coffee table by Poul Kjærholm for Kjærholm Productions was one of his last designs before his passing in 1980. Designed in 1979 and originally produced by E Kold Chrisensen in Denmark from 1980-1981, it was meant to pair with the PK-20 chairs, and was viewed as his most abstract and understated table, yet his most powerful. Larger than the PK-61, at 41" by 41" and slightly taller as well, this cocktail table suits larger sized rooms and sofas than the smaller PK61 table can.
Using flat steel bars for both legs and crossbars, joining with machine screws forming a square cruciform and topped with glass or stone, the symmetrical structure creates a stable object with no sense or orientation or implied direction, and creating a suspended plane. The tops of the legs are flush with the stone to hold the top in place and prevent it from slipping. Kjaerholms intentions were deliberate, emphasizing the cantilevered corners which reiterate the structural principle of the PK20 lounge chair. Precision engineering makes this table a true marvel - as everything fits together so perfectly - not something you see often in products made these days.
Poul Kjærholm's PK65 Coffee Table was designed in 1979 and originally produced by E. Kold Christensen (EKC) for a very short time with only a small number of tables made (is said to be twenty three tables that were made before EKC closed the business). Later on Poul's son, Thomas, produced the design under the company 'Kjaerholm Productions' from which this example was from. Currently, Fritz Hansen is now the producer of this design.
This PK 65 cocktail table by Poul Kjaerholm for Kjærholm Productions would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern or Danish modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Postmodern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office.
