This is a rare and large 48" inch 'Odyssey' bronze and pewter cocktail table by father and son team, Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, produced in the 1960s. Ingeniously designed with polychromed bronze, pewter and brass, this circular coffee table features a scalloped bronze base beneath a circular thick top with Greek and Roman motifs.

The "Odyssey" scene depicts Greek and Roman figures in a walled compound set amidst architecture, columns and urns. The clever use of contrasting surfaces and textures is most unusual and add dimension to the exotic scene. 'Odyssey' was offered in both a round version and an oval version with dual bases. Much more rare and sought after than the more common 'Chan' tables, also by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne.

Described in the Philip and Kelvin LaVerne 'Sculpture III' catalogue, 'Odyssey' - Hand sculpted bronze inlaid with pewter, depicting the muses of dance, music and drama posed amidst the Erectheum (Erechtheion or Temple of Athena) and Parthenon. A cast bronze column forms the base.

This round 'Odyssey' coffee (or tea) table by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Post-Modern, Contemporary or Zen / Minimalism room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office.
