Tugendhat Lounge Chair by Mies van der Rohe for Knoll Associates, 1960s, Signed
This rare and spectacular 'Tugendhat' lounge chair, Model MR70, by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Knoll Associates, circa 1960, is signed with original Knoll Associates label under the seat cushion. This fantastic cantilevered lounge chair is similar in styling as the 'Barcelona' chair but since it was discontinued by Knoll it is much more rare and hard to find, and highly sought after by interior designers and collectors.
Knoll Associates took over production from Berliner Metallgewerbe Josef Müller in the 1948. This example from the early 1960s after Knoll Associates moved to 320 Park Ave in New York. However since this is still by Knoll Associates prior to their change to Knoll International, this is still considered a 1st Generation Knoll example making it a collectors item and suitable for interior designers high end luxury residential and commercial projects.
The Tugendhat easy chair would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a contemporary or Postmodern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as a side chair, cafe or breakfast table chair, bedside chair, fireside chair, dressing or changing room chair, hallway chair, entryway or mudroom chair, nursing or reading chair, conference room chair, office or desk chair, guest chair, lobby chair, lounge chair or occasional chair ideal in virtually any setting.
More about the design:
The Tugendhat chair (model number MR70) is a modernist cantilever chair designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in collaboration with Lilly Reich 1929-1930 for the Tugendhat House in Brno, Czechoslovakia.
In appearance, the Tugendhat chair is somewhat of a hybrid of van der Rohe and Reich's 1929 Barcelona chair and 1929-1930 Brno chair. Like the Barcelona chair, the Tugendhat chair has a large padded leather seat and back, supported by leather straps mounted on a steel frame and legs. However, like one variant of the Brno chair, the frame is flat solid steel, formed under into a C-shape under the seat to create a cantilever. Versions exist with or without leather-padded steel arms. The metal was originally polished stainless steel; modern examples are often chrome-plated.
It was first produced by Joseph Müller Berliner Metall-Gewerbe and was later licensed to American furniture manufacturer Knoll, who produced a limited number of the chairs with and without arms from 1948.
