*SOLD* Set of Ten Signed Knoll Associates Brno Chairs by Mies van der RoheAutomaton Vintage Furnishings
Rarely do we get as excited to release a new item on 1stDibs as we are with this set of rare original early production (Circa 1958) Knoll Associates (labelled with their original 36-30 Steinway St address in Long Island City New York) "Brno" arm chairs in black leather and in simply amazing condition considering the age and history of this set of ten (10). This is an excellent opportunity for the distinguished collector, designer or client who wishes to have THE premiere set of signed originals by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - with beautiful supple original black leather and the incredible craftsmanship that was Knoll Associates through the 1950s.
As most collectors are aware, the Brno chair is one of the most highly copied of mid-century modern designs - so why would anyone pay so much for an unmarked Brno chair?... we do not know. Yet most of the inventory you will find are either unmarked versions (which can usually indicate that it is a unlicensed copy) or recent Knoll reproductions. Current reproductions can cost up to $3,000 per chair and have up to a 17 week lead time. Most other sets that you will find are unmarked, so you don't really know what you are going to get (this is the same reason we rarely buy these chairs, unless they possess the original labels like this set does). If you are a collector, designer or client who wishes the best of the best - and to have items that are unmistakingly originals of classic designs... don't settle for new reproductions or unmarked used inventory... consider the long term investment value of this set vs the other options available.
This set of ten (10) armchairs feature an elegant silhouette of slender proportions, comprising of a hefty stainless steel cantilevered frames and upholstered with the original classic black leather in excellent condition, ready to be used immediately. Underneath the original Knoll Associates label can be found (see pics). Original nail heads are visible underneath showing the incredible history of old American craftsmanship that you simply cannot get in today's manufacturing.
This exemplary set could work wonderfully with a large dining table or conference table, consider pairing with a dining table that has a marble table top or a large Nakashima style live-edge slab dining table. Can also be used scattered throughout a house or corporate office - such as a creative studio or showroom. The simple understated classic design of this chair allows you to pair it with most styles of decor, from Modern to Contemporary to Traditional. Designers - pitch this to your client before your competition does!
*MORE ABOUT THE BRNO CHAIR*
An icon of 20th-century design, the Brno chair was designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1930 for his renowned Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic. In 1958 Phillip Johnson put in a request to Knoll for the Flat Bar Brno chair as he intended on using the design for furbishing the Four Seasons restaurant.
