Paul Evans 'PE-32' Patchwork Copper Cabinet with Slate Top for Directional, 1968
Stunning 'PE-32' copper clad bar cabinet on casters by Paul Evans for Directional, produced in 1968 per original receipt which we have a copy of and will provide to the buyer upon sale. This incredible piece of design history is fabricated from patinated pieces of copper, brass, and pewter which have been welded and nailed in a patchwork style pattern resting on top of a patinated metal base. The 2 oversized round front door pulls are what sets this design apart from the rest - giving personality and character to this piece, almost to the point of personifying the cabinet.
The top has been fitted with an inset slate stone and the two-door front opens to reveal a green finish made to resemble patina in the interior which is divided into two, one side open storage space and the other with a single shelf. The PE32 cabinet sits atop casters for easy relocating. The back is fully finished so feel free to float this in the middle of the room - there is no need to have to place it against a wall. The fusion of these exterior materials formulates an exemplary piece which would be a welcome addition to any design lovers collection.
This is a very hard to get design, one of Paul Evans most sought-after due to the signature large front door pulls. I have had 3 others in this style plus a double wide variation and they have all sold very quickly. Each one I have acquired over the years has gotten more and more expensive and harder to find. When I first acquired this one I had planned to keep it - it is one of my favorite designs and I'm unsure when I will find another. However I decided to list this one for sale - possibly a decision I may regret.
What I like about this particular example is that I received a digital copy of the original receipt from the original owners of the cabinet. It is dated April 17th 1968 - making it one of the earlier ones made. When you purchase this cabinet, I will send you a copy of this receipt for your records.
We have the matching PE-17 floating wall console with PE-18 mirror and a large PE-31 end table if you would like to create a matching set. We also carry other Paul Evans designs, including Cityscape, Deep-Relief, and Sculpted Metal Collections. Contact us for more information or see our other listings for more details.
This Paul Evans patchwork copper cabinet for Directional would work great in a brutalist, mid-century modern, scandinavian or danish modern, or American modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a contemporary, hollywood regency or post-modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a traditional, classical or art deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. This cabinet would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge, members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as a dry bar for cocktail liquor or wine storage, a smaller credenza for an office or New York apartment, chest of drawers for linens, blanket chest, or just as a functional fine art piece.
MEASUREMENTS:

CONDITION:
Very good vintage condition with very light patina and wear. Some scratches to base and light scratches to slate top. The slate top can be cleaned, it shows white marks in the photos which are due to the texture of the slate which traps fine debris easily, that were not cleaned prior to the photos but can be easily removed. Inside of cabinet has scratches and scuffs commensurate with normal use over time. Very attractive early year example and ready for immediate use.
