Extendable and Retractable Steel and Glass Dining Table, 1980
This ingenious sliding steel and smoked glass dining table (or works great for a conference table as well!) by Design Institute America, circa 1980, allows you to extend and the dining table from 60" to 120" in length.
That's double the size! The top creatively slides under / over one another and is very easy to extend or retract - only takes one person to do it and anyone can, the mechanism holds all the weight so it does not require skill or strength to retract or extend the built-in leaf sections. Ideal for those who need a large table for entertaining or for work use - but then when open space is more important, can easily retract into a small footprint.
The steel is very heavy and substantial - it clearly demonstrates the high-quality of American production in the better years of US manufacturing, clearly proving the saying "they don't make them like they used to". This stylish table features a heavy steel base and steel top with inset smoked glass panes wrapped in chrome banding.
This extending dining table or conference table by Design Institute America would work great in a Post-Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Zen / Minimalism room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Condition:
Good condition with light wear and patina spots to steel and light wear and scratching to glass. Patina spots to steel are mostly concentrated to a few areas on the top. The steel may be able to polish to more like-new if desired. Overall good vintage condition, sturdy and structurally sound, ready to be used immediately in a vintage acceptable decor.
