This incredible 'Goetz Sofa' by Mark Goetz for Herman Miller features a walnut case, quality black leather cushions, and aluminum legs. Designed in 1998, this example produced in 2014, signed and dated with original Herman Miller labels.

Ideal for a home or office, with spacious resting place provided on this Goetz Case Sofa making it a true napping sofa and not just one that has "enough room." The whole design was aimed to make you extremely comfortable whether you're sitting or laying. That, and the sofa's sumptuous leather and fine walnut wrapped case are just the visual icing on the cake.

This wonderful case sofa by Mark Goetz for Herman Miller shares similarities with both the Eames Three-Seat Sofa and the Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin 'Rosewood Case Sofa' and would work great in a Postmodern, Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern or Danish modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Zen / Minimalism room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office as a sofa, large loveseat or three seat settee.

Materials:
Traditional sofa construction consists of a wooden frame with padding and upholstery applied over it. Mark Goetz turned that tradition inside out with this sofa. Its molded veneer shell is clearly visible as both aesthetic element and structural frame.

To achieve this look, Goetz incorporated an intricate miter that eliminates all but one seam where several planes intersect. Veneers wrap around the sofa's sides and back for a dramatic profile. 7" thick cushions and a seat depth that gives correct ergonomic support provide comfort. The result is a sofa appropriate for today's lifestyles that echoes Herman Miller's classic heritage.

From Herman Miller:
A common material creatively incorporated. Molded plywood carries an immediate association with classic Herman Miller designs, and Mark Goetz skillfully and creatively incorporates this material in his sofa design. By using common materials and processes in innovative ways, Goetz achieved a clean-lined, modern aesthetic.

As for the element of comfort, so important in a sofa, Goetz conducted his own research and consulted with other experts to arrive at a seat depth that provides ergonomic sitting support as well as room to lie down.

Goetz said that designing the sofa was a “daunting challenge” because it was to be part of the Herman Miller Collection of classic home and office products that define twentieth century design. “If I were sitting in a room with Eames, Nelson, and Noguchi, and we were discussing design, I would be listening rather than talking,” he said. “When designing the sofa, I took on that role, trying to understand the qualities of the collection that make it so wonderful. I wanted to create something that echoes the Collection and respectfully adds to it.”
