Set of Eight Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen 'Series-7' Chairs, c. 1973, Signed
This wonderful set of eight model #3107 (also called the "Series-7") stacking dining chairs in dark stained Ash were designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen in 1955. Signed underneath as can be seen in the photos with the early production plastic cap which is stamped: By Fritz Hansen, Made in Denmark, the Danish Control FurnitureMakers emblem and the FH logo along with the year 1973 indicating this set is an earlier year original (vintage) set produced in the early / mid 1970s. This is important for collectors vs buying a newer set. An early set in good original condition in a dark wood like wenge wood or rosewood are the most sought-after of the many variants this chair came in.
This set of 8 dining side chairs are stackable which make them excellent as a versatile solution for those who are seeking space saving furniture. The Series Seven chair was a variant of the Ant Chair and was inspired by a chair made by the husband and wife design team of Charles and Ray Eames using their plywood bending techniques.
The '7-chair' was widely believed to have been used in Lewis Morley's iconic photograph of Christine Keeler; however, the chair used in this photograph was an imitation and not an original Jacobsen. The chair used in the photo had a hand hold cut in the back however after the publishing of the photos sales of the Arne Jacobsen "7" chair rose dramatically.
